A Long History

In the early 1920s, Giuseppi and Cecelia DePalo immigrated from Bari, Italy through Ellis Island with their six children, with the hope of a better life in America. They established Depalo & Son Latticcini in Brooklyn, New York. They raised their family living above the store and their evenings were frequently interrupted by a string of customers. Their business became a mainstay for their bustling Italian neighborhood. The daily-made fresh mozzarella and ricotta were bragged as “the best” in New York. 

Their daughter, Grace, worked in the family business until her marriage to Louis Tedone, who also grew up in a similar business in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn. After the death of his father, while in high school and throughout medical school, Lou got up early every morning to make the fresh mozzarella for the family’s store before attending his schooling. 

Andrea & Scott Williams, Grace and Lou’s daughter, and son-in-law, opened Depalo & Sons in Shell Beach, CA in 1984. While raising their four sons, they have carried on the family’s traditions born in Bari, Italy, and Brooklyn, New York.

After Dr. Lou Tedone’s retirement from his successful pediatric practice, he began making mozzarella again, and an over 30-year tradition was reestablished at Depalo & Sons in Shell Beach. Many of the family’s recipes are still made today, including Italian specialties like our fresh handmade mozzarella made daily, and of course Grace’s Marinara Sauces, all made in the traditions handed down from the multiple generations of our past.

So many of our best times and memories are surrounded by family and friends around the table, from everyday, Sunday dinners, and holidays. At Depalo & Sons in Shell Beach, we pride ourselves in offering the best selection of wine, spirits, and provisions to highlight a special holiday meal, a romantic picnic overlooking our blue Pacific, a convenient lunch, or an easy and delicious dinner.

Homemade Marinara Sauces

“I remember every year Mama canning ripe plum tomatoes, usually in late August when the tomatoes were just ripened and delivered from the farm. The whole house smelled of fresh tomatoes cooking in huge kettles and the reward lasted throughout the year.” ~ Grace DePalo Tedone

DePalo and Sons pasta sauces are crafted in small batches, following recipes handed down from Grandma DePalo herself. Our sauces are gluten-free, all natural, have no added sugar, and use only the freshest, finest ingredients like vine-ripened tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil.

Every pasta has its perfect sauce and we encourage you to experiment to find your favorite pairing. Partner long strands with delicate sauces like Grace’s Marinara and smaller shapes with rich hearty sauces like Grace’s Bolognese.

Mattina Fiore

Mattina Fiore wines began in 2011 with the goal of delivering elegantly crafted wines worthy of San Luis Obispo’s history and premium vineyards. The name itself, Mattina Fiore, translates to “morning flower” in Italian, and is a tribute to the combined heritage of proprietors Scott and Andrea Williams: Andrea’s grandmother’s maiden name was Fiore and Scott was raised in his family's floral business in northern California.

The Wines

Produced in small quantities, Mattina Fiore wines are hand-crafted from grapes that have been carefully and blended to produce exceptional wines that we are proud to share with you. Our wines encompass the rich history of the vineyards and unique climate of the Central Coast. From our cool climate red varietals to our lush, Edna Valley white wines, we offer to you a broad range of wines that encapsulate the spirit of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.
